Do you know why we do spring cleaning? It comes from the Chinese and the Iranian New Year and the Jewish feast of Passover to remove all leavened bread from their homes. It makes sense to clean our homes each new year. Now with some cultural background, the tradition of spring cleaning occurring only a couple of months after we just cleaned in January makes total sense.
Spring cleaning allows us to give our homes a fresh start in a time of newness. While you should be vacuuming behind the couches and organizing your closet, you need to do a good amount of decluttering first. How do you expect to clean all the dust off the shelves if you leave all the clutter on top?
You can’t clean and organize without decluttering. If you don’t declutter first, it starts turning into the movie Wall-E…no matter how many times you try to clean up, there will always be more to clean.
Removing clutter from your home can improve your quality of life by lowering stress, improving your efficiency and mental abilities, and encouraging you to make healthier decisions in diet and exercise.
It’s also worth mentioning that once you have a clean, tidy, and decluttered home, it is much easier to keep it that way.
Here are 10 spaces and categories you should declutter this spring in order to give your home a fresh, new feel and improve your quality of life.
1 | Kitchen
For me, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It is where we spend the most time and where our friends come to gather. This is the room that deserves a lot of love since so much love is given in it. Remove all the expired foods and unused tools. Finally, it’s time to say goodbye to all those extra coffee mugs you’ve accumulated over the years (seriously, how many coffee mugs does one need?)
Here are tips for decluttering your kitchen.
2 | Wardrobes
My second greatest passion, next to food, is a curated closet. I think it’s important for every woman to have clothes she feels confident and comfortable wearing. Use these 10 questions to ask as you declutter your closet.
3 | Bedrooms
Your bedroom is a place for rest and sleep. A cluttered room can deprive you of these essentials since your brain wants to clear out the clutter. Trying to rest in a messy room is not exactly restive.
4 | Living Room
Do you live in your living room? If so, I’m certain there’s a plethora of toys, books, games, movies, music, and other things gathered in this room. The best way to handle the living room is to relocate everything back to where it belongs.
5 | Office
More and more people are working from home. Here’s what to declutter from your office this spring.
6 | Bathrooms
Did you receive a lot of little lotions and other bath trinkets during Christmas? Are they currently hiding under your sink? It’s time to declutter.
7 | Books
Don’t worry, bookworms! I urge you to hold on to the books you love most, the ones that “spark joy.” Let go of the books that make you cringe at the sight of them (that means you’re out, Scarlet Letter).
8 | Toys
Help your kids embrace simplicity and allow their imagination to grow. Donate the toys they don’t play with and toss the ones that are broken. You won’t regret it.
9 | Paper
Had to know this one was coming, right? I know there are piles of paper all over your house right now. You don’t need to keep over half of them. Grab a pile and start recycling.
Use this Paper Organizing Cheatsheet to help you.
10 | Garage
Give me an honest answer: Can you park your car in your garage? If not, what’s in there? Garages are clutter hotspots where things go to be forgotten. Take a trip down memory lane and see what you can donate or toss.
As you prepare for spring this year, make sure to have decluttering on your to-do list. Give your home a fresh start so you can reap the benefits of a calm, relaxing home.
