Spring is here! If you have a green thumb, I bet you’re outside in your garden, and how I envy you.
I am a plant killer. I have forgotten to water them, given them too much water, neglected the plant food, put them in the wrong place for sunlight…you name it, I’ve done it.
My mom, on the other hand, has a forest of houseplants and a thriving herb garden in the backyard.
I want to be like her. Maybe I’ll figure it out after years of doing everything wrong.
At least my tiny human is growing just fine. 🙂
My tiny human and I made a cute little DIY garden gift for my mom last Christmas. These garden markers would be perfect for a DIY Mother’s Day gift. Not only are they super easy to make, but they help keep our family organized when it comes to picking herbs from my mom’s expansive herb garden.
Hey, you can label stuff inside your house, so why not label your garden too? #organizerproblems
I’m not much of a DIY-er but I was inspired by these plant stakes on the Magnolia Market blog. Since my mom’s plants are massive, I had to find a way to make some taller stakes. I came across the idea to use barbeque skewers to add height.
DIY Spring Garden Markers
You will need:
- oven-bake clay (I used Sculpey),
- metal skewers (I used these stainless steel skewers),
- parchment paper,
- a rolling pin,
- a baking sheet, and
- one or multiple cookie cutters.
Note: Sculpey clay starts out really hard, so you will have to really knead the dough to soften it.
1 | First, roll out the dough on the counter to ¼” thickness. (In hindsight, I should have used some parchment paper under the dough to reduce the mess.) I let my daughter do this part with one of her rolling pins.
2 | Next, cut out the markers with your cookie cutters.
Since I was inspired by Magnolia, of course I had to use Hearth & Hand cookie cutters. You might be able to find them on clearance at Target since I got these around at Christmas.
3 | Once your markers are cut out, you can attach your skewers to the back. Lightly press the the non-pointed end of the skewer into the clay. Don’t push too hard or it might show through the front.
4 | Use extra clay to secure the skewer in the back.
5 | Lay the markers on a baking sheet covered in parchment paper. Bake them according to the clay manufacturer’s directions and allow to cool.
6 | Now you can use a permanent marker to write on them. If you need to change the label, lightly sand the clay to remove the marker.
If you want to be more like Magnolia, you can probably find some letter stamps to stamp into your clay before baking.
But that’s getting really complicated for me.
And there you have it! An easy DIY you can do with your kids this spring. You will no longer have to wonder what each plant is since it’s clearly labeled. Who knew it could be so handy to label your garden?
Make sure you pin this for later!
