“I’ll do it tomorrow,” said every procrastinator ever.
We’ve all been there, where we know we need to do something but for some reason never get around to doing it. The hardest part of any project is to start, and I’m assuming your project of getting the house decluttered and organized is one of those tough-to-start projects.
Want to know the two biggest pieces of advice I can give you when things are…well, disorganized?
First, start today.
Second, start small.
It’s waaaayyy easier to start a gigantic project like decluttering and organizing when you break it down into smaller pieces. No need to go nuts – unless you’re me, and doing a whole bunch of organizing all at once gives you so much peace and clarity.
Not kidding, I just reorganized my office closet, tidied my husband’s closet shelf and his sock drawer, and I went crazy cleaning the kitchen.
I feel so much better. I might possibly be procrastinating other things too.
Assuming you’re not a maniac like me (or you are, and we are totally kindred spirits), it’s probably a good idea to start with small decluttering and organizing projects.
Here are 9 places to start organizing when you have no clue where to start:
1 | Refrigerator
Seriously, have you checked the dates on some of those condiments recently? My brother is scarred for life because my mom left expired mayonnaise in the fridge one too many times.
Toss the old stuff, wipe down the shelves, then admire all the newly acquired, fresh clean space.
2 | Pantry
Same as the fridge: did you even know those Thin Mints we’re back there?
You can get your pantry organized on a budget – doesn’t matter if it’s one of those deep pantries or a massive one. Just remember to declutter first, assess, then you can go buy the fun organizing stuff 🙂
3 | Makeup
Did you know makeup actually expires? For example, mascara should only be used for 3 months then tossed. I admit, I think mine is at 5 months. (Time sure does fly!) I’ll be joining you in decluttering my makeup drawer. You can use the handy guide found here.
4 | To-do List
I say to do list, but we’re really talking “nagging tasks.” You know, those little things that build up that don’t have a deadline so they never get done? Yup.
Try using a Power Hour to get through it. In fact, you can use a Power Hour to do all of these projects.
5 | Junk Drawer
Everybody’s got one. And strangely enough, the things that are supposed to live in the junk drawer are never there. Like the scissors.
Get it organized so you can find the random things you need the next time you need them.
6 | Your bed
All you have to do is make the bed.
Easiest.
Project.
Ever.
Want a challenge? Try making it every day for the next 10 years. I dare ya.
7 | Sock drawer
It’s amazing how much better you feel with an orderly sock drawer.
No?
Just me?
Ok.
Well, this project is easy enough. Toss the socks with no buddy, or has holes or stretched elastic. And think about donating the pink knee high socks someone gave you and you swear you will never wear.
8 | Coffee Mugs
Why do I get 10 new coffee mugs every single year? When did coffee mugs become the universal gift when nobody knows what other gift to give? I only even use, like, one coffee mug anyway.
Rant over.
Go clean out your mugs.
9 | Mail
Toss all the junk mail and sort the stuff with personal information that you don’t want the bad guys to get into a shred pile. (Shredders are inexpensive, by the way…I linked the one I have.) Everything else that needs to be dealt with goes into your Actionable Paper Hub.
And there you have it. 9 little projects to get you started decluttering and organizing your home. Once you start, it’s easier to get on a roll.
