The hardest part about getting organized is getting started, isn’t it? Sure, it’s easier when you know you’re hosting a guest, having a party, or doing a holiday at your house. The motivation is built in right there. But what happens when you haven’t had anyone over in years because “it’s not clean enough?”
It’s hard to get motivated to do something you don’t want to do. Knowing it’s the right and healthy thing to do doesn’t help either.
Trust me, you can get organized …you just need some external motivation to get you going.
Today I’ll give you three ways to get motivated to organize.
Just know, though, that this requires asking for help. It’s the hardest thing in the world to do because you think you can do it alone. But just because you think you can do it alone doesn’t mean you should. If it’s taken this long to get started, it’s time to ask for help and set things on the right track.
01. Phone a friend
You might know someone who is good at organizing. This person might be crazy like me and loves to organize. This is the girl you want to call and invite to a “purging party” at your house. Chances are, she will jump because there’s nothing she likes more than a good decluttering session.
Plus, she probably won’t charge you.
Your friend is going to make you declutter. You’ll have a date on the calendar, and there’s no getting around it. No cancelling, K? (Unless your house gets struck by the flu. Then please cancel.)
It’s nice to have a friend help you because it’s someone you know. For some people it might be more comfortable than having a stranger come over. But if the thought of having someone you know come into your house while it’s messy makes you cringe, we’ll move on to another tip.
02. Hire a pro to come to your house
A pro organizer will not judge your “mess.” In fact, she will probably be itching to get started during the in-home consultation! Rooms full of piles do nothing to intimidate us – we’re so happy when we see spaces like this!
Many pro organizers offer packages with a set number of session hours. That means once you sign up for a package you are going to have to spend those hours organizing.
Sometimes putting money down on something means you’re making an investment in your time.
Nearly every one of my clients has told me that scheduling sessions with me forces them to actually organize instead of putting it off as they have for months. Or years. It also gives them motivation and courage to purge things they thought they couldn’t throw away.
There are so many benefits working side-by-side with a pro. She’ll tell you exactly where to start, ask you the right questions for decluttering, and help you organize things functionally. Plus, if she’s like me, she’ll teach you skills so you can keep things organized from now on.

03. Meet with a pro online
If you’re someone that just needs a little push in the right direction and a little bit of accountability, you should consider doing video chat sessions with a pro organizer. Basically, you’re hiring the pro as a coach to create a plan than keep you on the right path. This is a good option if you don’t have an organizer in your area or if you can’t meet an organizer during regular working hours.
This option makes it possible to work with a pro organizer that isn’t in your area —learn more about this option here.
You have to be able to do your homework if you want this kind of organizing to work. It’s up to you to do the job. The coach is there to support you and give you advice, direction, and work through the trouble spots. But for some, having a set appointment and paying someone to consult for you is enough motivation to get the job done.
And those are three ways to find motivation to start organizing.
Asking a friend for help can be tough, but works best if you’re on a budget or concerned about strangers. Hiring a pro to work with you side-by-side or to coach you online is an investment in your time and yourself which means the stakes are higher and your project must get done.
