This year I’m getting serious about setting goals and making progress. One of the goals I’m getting serious about? A reading challenge.
My problem isn’t getting around to reading — it’s getting around to reading new books. I end up reading my favorites over and over again. I’ll read the entire Anne of Green Gables series and Harry Potter every single year, and that’s 15 books right there.
This year, my reading challenge isn’t just to get reading — it’s to read 19 new, never-read books during 2019.
My favorite part about going to school was exploring new ideas through books. Since I’m not forced to read books anymore and have to search for books on my own, I haven’t bothered.
The past two years have been all about reading self-help and business books. But those are hard to read in the evening when I just want to check out. (Which is exactly why I keep grabbing Anne and Harry …they never disappoint.)
I definitely won’t limit my 19 books to a few genres. I’m going to read all the genres that interest me — fiction, children’s literature, self-help, business, religion, and even design.
To get started, I picked a few books I’ve been meaning to read and put in a hold request at the library since they’re popular titles.
Next, I set up an account at Goodreads so I could track my progress and hopefully find some good recommendations. So far, the list is up to 18. I plan on adding more as I go, and as I hear about new books I might want to read.
As far as rules, I won’t finish a book I don’t like. I’ll put it down and choose something else. And I’m allowed to take a book of the list if I find something more interesting I’d like to read.
