It’s been a hot minute since I wrote a post on spring cleaning …you know, everyone’s favorite topic. So here’s how I’m going to start things off: I hate spiders.
Matthew gets mad at me because I make him kill all the bugs that get in the house, but mainly the spiders. He gets mad because he thinks killing a spider shouldn’t bother me …but it does. Like, me and Ron Weasley would definitely have something to talk about if we ever met at a party …aside from the fact that he knows Harry Potter.
But I digress.
So today I decided since it’s cleaning day, maybe I should do a little bit of “spring cleaning.” It didn’t take long to figure out this was a very good idea.
I started in the playroom by moving things out the way so I could actually vacuum under and behind stuff. I moved Juliana’s basket of stuffed animals out of the way and turned around to find her emptying the entire basket everywhere.
Of course I started to tell her to “put everything back, I have to vacuum over there still,” when she pointed into the basket exclaiming, “Mommy, hurry!”
What did I find at the bottom of the empty basket? A spider. Possibly a black widow. Or that could be me being overly dramatic.
No time to grab a longer tube for the vacuum I just ran over and vacuumed that big, black icky thing up, praying that it would actually die in the vacuum. Because you know I listen to those stories about spiders crawling back out of a vacuum {shiver}.
Now I totally get why spring cleaning is a good idea. You never know what might be lurking in your child’s stuff.
Today I’m going to list for you the simple spring cleaning tasks that are on my list this spring that you can steal for yourself. I promise it’s not a very long list, because who has time for that?
You can definitely use this list to go along with the Decluttering Made Simple guide that you can get for free when you subscribe right here. It will help you figure out which room to start cleaning and decluttering. Because when you’re decluttering, you also need to clean, and vice versa.
You can also use this list for 10 places to declutter this spring. But the guide is way better since it’s customized to you.
The Spring Cleaning List for Every Room in the House
Under & Behind Furniture
If you’re anything like my family, you got allergies. Also, you might have random toys, crackers, cereal, and popcorn hanging out under couches.
Also, there might be spiders.
So, definitely take a little bit of time to vacuum and dust behind and under your furniture.
Blinds & Drapes/Curtains
I have a confession: I haven’t cleaned my blinds in 3 years.
Honestly, it doesn’t bother me …until I see little fingerprints left on the blinds by my kid. Then I think, Gee, when was the last time I cleaned those?
So, definitely should do that more often because allergies. But I have to experiment with the most efficient and easy way to do it. I’ll keep you posted.
Baseboards
One time when my grandmother was visiting, she asked my mom, “How do you clean your baseboards?”
Mom: I don’t.
I guess I take after my mother, but in the blinds department.
Turns out that cleaning the baseboards is a good job for your kid. Let’s be honest, they’re close to the ground already.
I just sprayed some Thieves all-purpose cleaner on a microfiber cloth and let Juliana go for it.
Rugs
I try to wash my rugs once a month but I kinda got behind schedule. Things have been busy around here.
As a rule, I try to only use rugs in high traffic areas that can actually go in the washer. It makes my life so much easier.
I did recently find out about a company called Rugable that makes area rugs that can go in your washer. Take my money! …when I have some.
Fans & Light Fixtures
You know how when you look up at your fans when they’re off and you see that fuzzy black line at the edge of each wing? (I don’t know what they’re called –you know what I mean.) Yeah, that means you should probably get a step ladder and clean it!
Windowsills
Dead bugs? Sounds like a good job for my hubby. (Love you, honey!)
Oven
Um, yeah, I’ll be trying out that self-clean button on my oven this spring. Then I’ll be on Pinterest looking up ways to get the oven glass clean. I think it has something to do with baking soda, Dawn, and a magic eraser.
Bedding
I do this more often than once a year (I swear), but spring just seems like the perfect time to wash all your bedding. Down comforter and all. To me, there’s nothing that says spring cleaning more than freshly washed bedding …
And stuffed animals. After the spider incident all the Disney princess dolls went for a spin in the washer. No question about that.
So I’ll probably eventually realize that there’s something else I haven’t cleaned in ages that I should. But for this spring, this is what’s on my list. I do have a regular cleaning routine that includes bathrooms, kitchen, floors, dusting, and watering my plants. (Anyone else struggling to keep their plants alive?) I batch that all into one day a week to save time.
