The other night while having dinner with my family, I was setting up babysitting with my sister-in-law so I could go do an organizing session. My dad, although supportive of what I’m doing, voiced his surprise that people would hire a Professional Organizer to do something they could do themselves. So I asked him, “Why do people hire personal trainers? Or house cleaners?” (Note: they have a house cleaner.)
He got it after that.
Yes, you can absolutely do it yourself, but at some point, it’s just easier to have someone help you or do it for you.
You know the benefits of using a Pro Organizer if you read this post, but there are still some things holding you back.
And I know exactly what they are.
There are 5 reasons why you’re afraid to hire a Professional Organizer, and today I’m going to talk about every single one of them.
01. “What will everyone think of me?”
I heard this recently during a consultation, “I’ve been wanting to do it, but it seems so selfish.”
This is just another version of “What will everyone think of me?”
It’s not selfish of you to try and improve the state of affairs in your house. If the clutter and piles are making you feel crazy, the rest of the family is going to notice.
I look at it this way: organizing your house is another form of self-care. How can you be healthy and happy if you’re feeling mentally drained and bogged down by clutter? I admire the people who take the initiative to improve their lives.
02. “I can do it myself.”
Yes, you definitely can do it yourself. (I admit, I do.) But you might be struggling to stay focused on your project because there’s other things that are a higher priority.
You might not have a problem decluttering but you just don’t know what to do with the stuff you need to keep. Where should those piles go?
A Professional Organizer can help you move past those problems so your house actually gets organized. And you can keep it that if you listen to her/his advice for systems and routines that will work for you.
03. “I’m embarrassed about someone seeing my mess.”
There’s always that moment during a consultation where I see my client want to shrink into a hole and wish they didn’t have to show me their dirty little secret of a mess.
Happens every time.
Did you hear that? Everybody has that embarrassing mess. But here’s what you need to know: POs are there to do a job to help you, not judge you.
When I walk into a client’s house, I’m analyzing each space and asking questions to find out how I can help my clients make changes to prevent the “mess.”
In my corporate career, I was a research analyst. I’m wired to collect data without passing judgement and find a way to make a positive story from it. And that’s what I do as a Pro Organizer too.
The positive story I create now is finding easy ways for you to make organizing habits so that embarrassing mess can be prevented.
04. “My daily chores are really the problem.”
Think I can’t help you with your laundry problem? I totally can. Organizing is about having habits, routines, and systems, and I teach exactly that.
One client’s biggest complaint was being behind on laundry. “But you can’t help me with that,” she stated.
But I did. We decluttered the clothes to decrease the number of clothes that could end up in the laundry while I explained how she could implement a simplified system for doing laundry.
So, yes. Pro Organizers can help you with your daily chores.
05. “I can’t afford it.”
Oh, the big one. Professional Organizing can cost a pretty hefty dollar depending on where you live and who you work with. But organization is an investment in you and your family. It’s about improving the quality of your life and giving you freedom.
If you implement the habits and systems a PO suggests, then your investment could be a one-time investment, saving you hundreds or thousands of dollars in the future. (I’m talking about additional sessions, accidentally buying duplicate items, renting storage units, etc.)
But if you still don’t think you can stretch it, you can do things on your own with guidance from a PO so you’re not wasting time or money or getting frustrated.
You can be free and happy, armed with the knowledge to keep things organized, free of embarrassing messes, catching up on your daily chores, and it can be affordable when you hire a professional organizer.

How interesting that you point out that people are actually afraid to hire an organizer. I am moving this month and want to be much more organized in my new place. I will find a reputable professional organizer to help here and when I move in!

I loved how you said that professional organizers can get the work done so that you can focus on other priorities. My mom has wanted to organize her house for a few months, but she hasn’t got much time to do so. I will suggest that she hire a professional home organization service to do it for her so she doesn’t have to worry about it anymore.
