Are you still staring around your house, surrounded by piles, paralyzed by the daunting task of getting started? You want all those piles to disappear, but you don’t know how to start. It’d be nice if you could organize it in 10 minutes, right?
Maybe you chose a room to start in. That’s good.
But what next?
I’m going to tell you the organizing secret to getting started …
Ready?
You just have to start.
Before you start freaking out, I’ve got your back.
Here are 25 things you can organize in 10 minutes or less.
Pssst …and these tasks are so easy, your kids can do them for you!
Dirty clothes
Got dirty clothes littered all over the floor? Pick them up and put them in the hamper.
Easy, right?
Laundry pile
Want to really remove that pile of dirty clothes? Throw it in the laundry! While you’re at it, knock out all the laundry.
Mail pile
I betcha half of that mail pile is junk. Sort by keep, recycle, shred.
You’re good as gold.
Paper pile
You might have several of these around the house, but just start with one. Just use these 3 steps to get them sorted.
The “Dump” Zone
You know, the part of the house where everybody just throws their stuff when they come in the door? Take 10 minutes to put things back where they belong, throw away trash, set aside things that need to be returned, or add items to the donate pile.
Keys
Always losing your keys? Hang a hook next to the door or place them in a pretty bowl on the entry table.
Your next job? Use the 1-Minute Rule to make sure they’re always where they belong.
TV remotes
Is everybody searching for the Apple TV remote all the time? That little thing always gets stuck between the couch cushions.
Decide where your remotes will permanently live and TELL EVERYBODY, “This is where we put them when we’re not using them.”
It might take a while for the family to get used to it, but be persistent.
Shoe pile
Can’t get through your door because of the massive pile of shoes? Corral them up with a basket.
Don’t have one? Use a bin for now and upgrade later to a pretty basket labeled with each family member’s name.
Backpacks
Everybody’s backpacks on the floor? Find a wall space, grab some Command Hooks and give them a place to go.
Dirty Dishes
Sink full? Just go ahead and do those dishes. That’s an easy pile to clear in the scheme of things.
Expired makeup
Um, seriously. It’s time to say goodbye to that eye shadow palette from high school. Use the list in this post to help you figure out what needs to go.
Toys in non-toy areas
Grab a basket and walk around the house picking up out of place toys.
Receipts
Somehow, they end up all over the house, covering desks, cluttering up your purse, or forming random piles on the kitchen counter.
Collect them all in a box and put it someplace that you can easily access. Now start using the 1-Minute Rule.
Expired meds
Although you’ll have to make sure you dispose of your expired meds the right way, it won’t take long to declutter them.
