It’s so hard to work on things that we don’t like doing, isn’t it? I’m a big procrastinator when it comes to those unenjoyable tasks, and I always find excuses for not doing them.
But I’ve realized a couple of things when I finally sit down and do the work.
- The task wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.
- My life is so much better because I did it.
Even though I know this, I still catch myself making all the excuses not to do it.
I know you do this too. How? Because you’ve told me so.
In fact, there are 4 excuses many of you have told me about why you haven’t started organizing.
Honestly, these excuses can be applied to anything. So I’m going to give you my tips to get you unstuck from your excuses and doing the work that’s going to bring you closer to the life you want to have.
Excuse #1: I don’t know where to start
I haven’t said this, but I’ve definitely felt it. There are some projects that are so big and overwhelming that it’s hard to get past the starting line.
So here’s what I do: I find one small thing I can do that doesn’t seem so hard to do. Like if my house is a mess after a party, I start by picking up the trash.
If you don’t know how to start decluttering your house, pick something small. Do a drawer or a shelf. You just have to get past the starting line.

Excuse #2: I don’t have time.
I’ve definitely said this one. As a mom, time is definitely something that’s hard to come by. But the truth is, if it was important to you, you would make the time.
I heard someone talk about changing the words from “I don’t have time” to “It’s not a priority.”
There’s power in those 4 words!
So is organizing your home important to you? If it is, then I know you can find time to do it.
You don’t have to set aside an entire weekend to do it, or a full 8 hours. You can do it in just a few minutes each day. You work on it as you see fit.
Get started by thinking of “organizing” as part of life, and spend 10 minutes a day getting organized.
Excuse #3: My family is in the way.
It’s hard to do things when you’re constantly distracted by other people. Trust me, I deal with this every single day.
I still work despite the distractions. It’s not as effecient and takes longer, but it’s ok. What I’m doing is important to me, and I want to invite my family into that.
I’m teaching my daughter the importance of keeping at something you believe in. I’m trying to make life better for my family. So I let her get involved. Or, if I can’t afford distractions, I ask someone to babysit.
My family is important to me and I refuse to use them as a reason to be miserable. They are a gift to bring me joy.
Excuse #4: I’m not motivated.
Whenever I know I need to start on a project and I’m just not feeling it, I ask myself, “Why am I doing this?”
I like to write down why I’m doing big important things because there are days I don’t want to do the work. If I write it down, I can read it when those days come. And they definitely come.
If you’re not motivated to declutter your home, think big. What kind of life do you dream of having? What do you dream for your home? How do you want to feel when your home is organized?
Write it down in a journal. Type it into your phone’s notes. Keep it on hand for those days when you aren’t feeling it.
