If you want to get organized, you have to declutter, right? That’s what I thought … until I started working with clients. It became clear very quickly that just decluttering wasn’t helping much.
You wouldn’t think that wouldn’t be the case considering the hundreds of blogs, books, services, and courses about decluttering and organizing.
I won’t deny that I love seeing blogs like Refined Rooms and Just A Girl and Her Blog. They’re great for figuring out how and what to declutter.
I love following accounts like The Home Edit on Instagram. It gets you inspired to beautify your space and get organized.
But then you have Marie Kondo. In her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, she boldly claims that once you use the KonMari Method to declutter your home, you’ll never have to declutter again.
How could she claim that?
It’s because her method is more about changing your behavior and mindset than it is about “sparking joy.”
Even minimalism isn’t so much about getting rid of all your stuff. It’s about living intentionally —a lifestyle.
When embracing the KonMari Method or minimalism, you’re committing to a lifestyle.
Why?
Because unless you change how you react to clutter and how you treat it, the clutter will keep coming back.
Instead of spending your energy on learning how to declutter, I think it’s better to devote your energy toward changing the way you treat clutter.
How do you start?
You start with small actions like recycling the ads in the mail right away. Or putting your shoes away after you come home.
It doesn’t seem like this would do much, but doing it consistently will make a huge difference.
And it’s a heck of a lot easier than decluttering.
If you’re not ready to declutter, don’t. Focus on changing how you treat clutter every single day. Use this checklist to start with small actions that will make a huge difference.
