When I decided to pile as much on my plate as I could to work from home full time, have my kid home with me all day, and start a business, I really had to get organized. And it happened by getting my home automated.
Most people talk about automating their business. But I believe you can automate cleaning and organizing your home, too.
I’m not talking about outsourcing –although if you can do that, good for you! I’m talking about having things running so smoothly you don’t suffer from the usual symptoms of having a disorganized house.
And if you work from home, a disorganized home can easily derail your productivity and efficiency.
Here are the usual symptoms I see (and experienced) from not having my home systems automated: distraction, multi-tasking, stress, decision fatigue, and wasting time.
Putting together systems, even as you work from home, will prevent you from getting these symptoms …at least where the leading cause is clutter.
Combat Distraction by Creating Rhythms
It’s difficult to focus when in the back of your mind you know all the chores you need to do, including that drawer or closet that needs organizing.
Creating a rhythm to do the chores or spend time organizing will keep you from getting distracted. If it’s in your planner, all scheduled out, no need to worry or dwell on it. It’s going to get done.
Stop Multi-Tasking & Set Routines
Multi-tasking is really bad for productivity and efficiency. It leads to a lot of half-completed tasks, leaving you feeling like you didn’t accomplish anything.
Instead of chasing squirrels all day, set aside specific times of day to complete repetitive household chores so they actually get finished.
De-Stress by Decluttering
This study found that women who describe their homes as “cluttered” have high levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. You know as well as I do that it’s hard to feel creative and do your best work when you’re stressed out.
Reduce the clutter (and the stress) by playing defense. If you don’t need something, don’t let it stay in the house. If it needs to get put away, put it away right away!
Cut Decision Fatigue through Automation
We make over 35,000 decisions per day (probably more). At some point your brain gets tired and you make poorer decisions for your business.
Make decisions automatically by giving all your items a place to go. Use a framework to decide where everything in your home will live.
Set up a weekly schedule with themed days so you always know what to do next.
Stop Wasting Time by Planning
Combining these symptoms leaves you overwhelmed and unsure of what to do. So, you sit around scrolling on your phone instead of doing anything.
If you set goals, you aren’t left to wonder what to do. There’s always something to work on, especially if you can break your goals into smaller, actionable steps. I use the PowerSheets to help me create plans so I always have something to do (including fun things!).
