Have you ever had one of those moments where something that was way on the backburner suddenly became one of the most life-changing, important things you needed to do?
I’ve found that the hardest and scariest things that are on my “list” are the most life-altering things I can do. And that’s probably why I resist it so much.
Nearly 3 years ago, we started seeing a NaPro Fertility doctor for our secondary infertility. One of the things we were told to change, among many other things, was the level of stress in our lives.
Easier said than done.
I was working a full-time corporate job from home while staying home with our daughter. Plus, I was working on building up my Pro Organizing business.
Needless to say, I was stressed out from guilt about spending too much time working, then guilty that I wasn’t working, then trying to figure out how to handle all the day-to-day stuff that comes with living in a house.
Lighting the fire of an organized life
Since the doctor ordered that we change our diets as well, the first order of business, after that fateful visit, was to figure out how to get us on this diet. The only solution I found to overcome this obstacle was to make a plan –that’s when I started meal planning.
That was what lit the whole thing on fire.
As I meal planned every week, I realized how much easier things were at dinnertime. I wasn’t stressed figuring out what to give my husband in his lunches every day. We were pretty much sticking to this new diet as a result of planning ahead.
The Life-Changing Magic of …change
After this, things spiraled…in a good way. I started creating “official” systems and routines to keep myself on track and focused. I set aside days for taking care of my house and all the little to-dos.
Eventually, I developed a dedicated time and framework for taking care of all the little to-dos in what I call a CEO Day. It’s too much to go into here, but I’m teaching the entire framework inside my new course, The Essential Home Organizing Blueprint.
As I got more focused, I invested in a goal-setting planner and an actual planner. Since I had a stake in the game, I started using both religiously.
I now set goals that have me planning ahead far more than I ever did before. Funny how I never realized setting goals can give your life direction.
Prioritizing is key
In an attempt to get even more focused, I’ve started going to bed at hours I never thought I would –8:30pm instead of 12am. I now have time every morning to have my “me time” to pray and gather my thoughts.
I dedicate a little bit of time on Sunday mornings to figure out my priorities for the week using a brain download (that I learned about from this podcast). Then I plan and schedule my week according to my priorities.
Way back at the beginning with my doctor’s prescription, I thought all this planning was way too much work and not worth the effort.
I can’t tell you how wrong I was!
Life still has its stresses —you can’t get away from it when you have kids and careers. But I being able to organize so many elements of my life makes life less stressful. I’m in control of my home, my health, and my time.
There is definitely magic in having a plan and an organized life.
