Having a step-by-step framework makes you feel prepared, right? I’m a sucker for a good step-by-step tutorial, and that’s what I’m here to give you today: a framework for how to declutter any room in your home.
One of the hardest things to start to do is declutter your home. It feels overwhelming and like a total drag, but the benefits of a clutter-free environment outweigh all the pain of doing it.
For instance, organized people have better overall health —they eat healthier, exercise regularly, sleep better, and are less stressed.
But to get any of these benefits, you first have to remove the clutter. And that’s where this tutorial comes in.
Here’s a step-by-step framework showing you how to declutter any room in your home.
Step 01. Choose a place to start
Start with something small, something you know how to do, and something you can finish within the timeframe you have.
If you’re stumped on where to start, either the room or the area of the room, download this free guide to walk you through it here >>>
If you need ideas for a small win, here are 25 things you can organize in 10 minutes or less.
Step 02. Take everything out
It’s intimidating to take everything out of a cluttered cabinet or closet. There are things in there you don’t want to see. Plus, it’s going to make a mess to have everything out.
This step will allow you to evaluate the space, take inventory of what you have, and then start fresh in organizing the space.
One thing to always remember through decluttering: It always gets worse before it gets better.
Step 03. Toss the trash
Make the mess a little bit better by separating and throwing away the trash. Toss empty bottles, paper scraps, broken items that probably won’t ever get fixed, etc.
This step will lessen the amount you have to sort through.
Step 04. Sort items
Going little by little, sort items by keep, relocate, and discard.
Your keep pile may be multiple piles because as you choose what to keep, you’ll want to sort by similarity.
Anything that doesn’t belong in that space is placed in a relocate pile.
Anything to be discarded (recycle, trash, donate, sell, return) will go in another pile or several piles.
Use this framework when you need to know how to declutter any room in your home:
Step 01. Choose a place to start
Step 02. Take everything out
Step 03. Toss the trash
Step 04. Sort items
It’s not complicated because sorting through and making decisions is tough enough.
