I’m the only one in my family that’s an avid reader. My parents weren’t big readers but they indulged my reading obsession by signing me up for those 90s book clubs (hello, Babysitter’s Little Sister) and helping me hunt down more Boxcar Children books.
Now as a mother, I want so much to share the love of reading with Juliana. And even though I loved reading Mr. Brown Can Moo, I’ve been waiting for the day that I could re-read my favorite books from my childhood with her.
One of our daily rituals is to read before quiet time and bedtime. For so long we read picture books, but now, to my excitement, we’re reading chapter books.
Here are the chapter books we’ve read to our 4-5-year-old so far that the whole family enjoyed.
The Boxcar Children
This was the first chapter book Juliana was really interested in. It has a special place in my heart because it was the book my mom brought home from the library that we read together. I was struggling with reading, and this is the book that got me going.
The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
This was always on my list of books to read that I never got around to. We read it and loved it (and we have the whole Chronicles of Narnia to finish reading).
Beezus and Ramona, Ramona the Pest, and all the Ramona books
I loved reading the Ramona books as a kid. They’re especially fun to read with Juliana because she’s close to Ramona’s age in the earlier books. These books tell it from the kids’ perspectives, and I can’t help but laugh over the scrapes Ramona gets herself into.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the illustrated version
I might’ve jumped the gun a little on this book, but this is my second favorite book series of all time. (My FAVORITE is Anne of Green Gables.) I couldn’t wait anymore to share it with Juliana!
Some of it was a little hard for her to understand, but we watched the movie afterward which I think helped a little bit.
The Little House on the Prairie series
My favorite part of the day is when we gather together before bedtime to read another chapter in the series. I was always reading a Little House book as a kid, and I appreciate them more as an adult.
As a kid, it’s fun to imagine what it’d be like to live as a pioneer. But as an adult, it’s incredible to read about how dangerous, yet simple life was.
That’s just what we’ve read so far. There are so many more books we can’t wait to read together!
