Have you ever wondered how some people make organizing look so easy? What does she have that you don’t have? What does it take to be an organized person?
The answer’s simple …
It’s in the habits.
There’s really no secret to it. Cultivating good habits = an organized lifestyle.
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, writes, “A lifestyle is not an outcome, it is a process. For this reason, all of your energy should go into building better habits, not chasing better results.”
She makes it look easy because organized is her lifestyle.
So if you want that lifestyle, you’ve got to cultivate organized habits.
Here are 4 habits you need to be an organized person.
Habit 01. The 1-Minute Rule
The 1-Minute Rule is this: If it takes you less than a minute to do it, do it right then.
The One-Minute rule works great for daily habits such as putting away your shoes and bag when you come home, hanging up your jacket when you come home, putting food away as you go.
Using this one habit can transform your home overnight.
Habit 02. The 10-Minute Tidy
Spend just 10 minutes doing everything you can to tidy up your home. Sweep the floor. Do a load of laundry. Empty the dishwasher. Put away the toys that aren’t being played with.
I started doing a 10-Minute Tidy without realizing it when I would sit in my office putting together reports while my daughter went wild in her playroom. I’d focus on what needed to get done until it got done. Once I finished, I’d come out and tidy up the house for 10 minutes or so.
I do this repeatedly every couple of hours –in the morning after breakfast, mid-morning after completing some work tasks, after lunch, and again in the afternoon before quiet time.

Habit 03. Nightly Reset
A Nightly Reset puts your home back into order so it’s ready for the next day.
This habit can include getting the kitchen cleaned up, setting out clothes for tomorrow, or even checking that you have stuff for breakfast.
It’s not about the physical set-up. Resetting your home gets you in the mental space that you’re ready for whatever tomorrow brings.
Habit 04. “Before We Leave”
Leave your home the way you’d like to find it. Spend the 10 minutes before you leave to load the dishwasher and pick up stray items to put them back in their “homes.”
“Before We Leave” isn’t always possible to do, but it feels really good when it does happen!
