I recently came across this quote from Louis Parrish: “If you can organize your kitchen, you can organize your life.” ← You probably already realize that since tips for kitchen organization is one of the most requested topics around here.
For my family, most of the action happens in the kitchen. If it’s not organized daily, bad things will happen.
Well, mostly we get frustrated and waste time, but to me those count as bad things.
There are 3 things I do before closing up my kitchen every single night to prevent any disorganization side-effects. These 3 tips I’m sharing with you today are what keep my kitchen organized.
If you can implement these 3 easy kitchen organization tips every single evening, you’ll be thanking yourself later.
Tip 01. Do the dishes.
If I had to choose the worst chore to start my day with, it’s a sink full of dirty dishes.
Not having the dishes cleared up in the evening automatically backs up the kitchen the next day. I’m behind before the day begins.
I prevent pile-ups by doing dishes after each meal, and most importantly after dinner. I run the dishwasher every evening so we don’t run out of dishes the next day.
Get the dishes done faster by having your family work together as a team. Play games or music and make it a time to connect with each other.
Here’s a post with 8 ideas for making chores fun for the whole family.
Tip 02. Clear, wipe, and sanitize the counters and the table.
Starting the day with clear counters and tables gives everyone space during the early morning rush. There’s room to make breakfast, pack lunches, and take care of last-minute things before heading out the door.
Wiping and sanitizing the counters and the table every night saves me time later. I’m not using extra elbow grease trying to scrub food off surfaces during my weekly kitchen batch cleaning.
Tip 03. Return all items to their homes.
The number one rule of organization is this: a place for everything and everything in its place.
Every night, I put all kitchen items back in their respective drawers, cupboards, or place on the counter. This ensures that my family members and I can find what we need when we need it and it gives us space to work during the morning rush.
This kitchen organization tip requires some work on the backend. Creating zones in your kitchen makes it easier to organize.
Use this simple kitchen organization guide to create zones and this post to organize your kitchen counters without cluttering them up.
These 3 things are part of my Nightly Reset rhythm. At this point, I do these 3 things without having to think much about them. As a result, it’s no big deal.
This is why I put so much emphasis on cultivating habits and rhythms (which is what I teach inside the Essential Home Organizing Blueprint)! Keeping your home organized doesn’t have to take over your life —it becomes part of the flow and hardly noticeable in the scheme of things.
