Ever wondered how you ended up with so much stuff? We’re always ordering new items, bringing things home, or making new things. It’s an endless cycle. The only way to keep order and keep clutter at bay is to purge your house daily.
You’ll find a lot of articles on the internet giving you the steps to purge your house once a year or maybe working on one area a month.
However, I’ve found that if you make purging and decluttering part of your day, you save time and brain cells later on. Your purging sessions won’t be as long or as tiresome, and you won’t have to do them as often.
It doesn’t have to take long to purge your house each day …just a few minutes by implementing a few simple behaviors.
Try these 3 behaviors to purge your house in 10 minutes a day.
Use the 1-Minute Rule to throw away trash.
In this post, I talk about how the 1-Minute Rule can be one of the most transformative behaviors for organizing your home. This rings true when you use it to purge your home as well.
During decluttering sessions with clients, I’m always surprised at how much trash we end up purging —trash that could have been thrown away or recycled long ago. Instead, it’s left to take up space until a purging session.
Challenge yourself and your family members to use the 1-Minute Rule to throw away trash. (Throw it away immediately instead of setting it to the side.) This one simple behavior will save you hours later and bring you peace of mind in the meantime.
If you think your family will resist, read this post about making chores fun for the whole family.
Set up a system for processing incoming papers.
There is no avoiding paper. But there is a way to avoid paper clutter.
Set up one place for all incoming papers to go —I call this an Actionable Paper Hub. ALL papers, no matter what type go into this hub every single day. Set aside one hour one day per week to sort through the papers in the hub to recycle, shred, or file.
Using this system means there’s only one pile of paper at a time and papers are purged weekly.
You could also do preliminary purges by recycling junk mail and unneeded papers before placing it in the Actionable Paper Hub.
This full system is explained inside The Paper Hubs System.
Have a place for everything, and put everything in its place.
Everything you have should have a place to be stored. Meaning, when you decide to bring things home or keep something, you have to find a place for it.
During our 10-Minute Tidies or our Nightly Reset, we make sure to find a place for all our items —both new and old. If there isn’t a place for it, I have to decide if that item is truly necessary to keep or not.
This is something to practice daily in order to keep clutter from piling up around the house.
Use these 5 rules to become a clutter-free shopper and this post to learn how to find a place for everything.
Practice these 3 easy behaviors to purge your house daily and see if your home isn’t more organized and clutter-free.
