I love that time just before the new year to reflect on the past year’s goals and start fresh with new ones. Every year, I read books on all different subjects to help me improve and live wholeheartedly as I progress through the year. There are 7 books in particular that come to mind as the best books to inspire your new year.
I’ve rounded up my favorite, most-influential books I’ve read over the past years that you should add to your reading list.
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
If your goal this year is to be happier (post-2020, I think we all need happier), this is the perfect read for you. Author Gretchen Rubin documents her year of experimenting with ways to be happier. From going to the gym to starting a children’s lit book club, her Happiness Project will inspire you to live a little happier this year. It might even inspire you to do your own Happiness Project.
The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown
Brene Brown is THE expert in shame and resilience. This book provides 10 guideposts for wholehearted living. Learn to let go of perfection and live courageously and authentically.
Essentialism by Greg McKeown
While written for business leaders, I still found the lessons in this book relevant. You’ll learn how to cut out the things that aren’t important so you can focus on the things that make the biggest impact.
The More of Less by Joshua Becker
One of the first books I read in my journey of less, Joshua Becker provides wisdom and insight in what happens when you have less. I loved the real-life stories he shared of others choosing less.
The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
This probably makes a lot of New Year’s reading lists, but learning to manage your money is something I wish they taught better in school. After reading this book, we were more motivated to be debt-free. And a few months later, we got there.
Atomic Habits by James Clear
I talk about habits A LOT around here. It’s truly the key to staying organized …and how we live our lives. Learning the science behind creating habits will help you to be strategic in cultivating habits that will improve your life.
Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport
After reading this book, I cut out a lot of social media and screen time. Turns out, I’m much happier for it. By understanding what media and devices do to our brains, we can make more informed decisions to use them as tools.
These are my top 7 books to inspire your new year. It might be impossible to read all 7 of these books in January, but I encourage you to add them to your reading list (or reading goal) for the year.
