I recently heard someone say this (and I’ve said it myself): “I’m a Catholic, so I know it’s in the Bible, but I don’t know where.” I’ve always wanted to know my Bible better in order to know God better. Over the last year or two, I’ve found several ways to make reading Scripture part of my day.
Like most things, making Scripture part of your day is about making it part of your routine. I’ve learned that if I tack it on as something I need to check off a list, I’m less likely to do it. As habits expert James Clear said, “Do the most important thing first each day and you’ll never have an unproductive day.”
For that reason, I make prayer and reading Scripture the very first thing I do. Part of my inspiration came from Bishop Robert Baron.
I once heard him say that he always brings a cup of coffee into the Blessed Sacrament Chapel each morning when goes to pray. Now he associates the smell of coffee with Jesus. Does it get any better than that?!
To make reading Scripture part of your day, here are some options out there for you to use that I’ve found particularly helpful.
Option 01. Daily Mass Readings
Did you know that if you read the daily Mass readings for 3 years you’ll read nearly the entire Bible? I love that the Church gives us a plan for reading Scripture daily.
To find those readings, you can go to usccb.org to read or listen each day. There’s also an option to receive them in a daily email.
If you check your email first every day, I recommend joining the Blessed Is She Devotions emails and/or the daily Gospel reflections from Bishop Robert Baron. You’ll receive the daily readings and a short reflection directly to your inbox.
Option 02. The Bible In A Year Podcast
This year, Fr Mike Schmitz began hosting the Bible In A Year podcast where he reads through several chapters of the Bible daily and offers a short reflection or explanation.
Reading the Bible with someone to guide me has given me a much better understanding of the story of salvation.
My husband and I have both been listening to this podcast daily. We’ve been able to discuss it together daily, which has been a great way for us to grow in faith together.

Option 03. Daily Lectio Divina (with the Hallow app)
Lectio Divina is a method of reading through Scripture that traces back to St Benedict.
It’s a slow, rhythmic reading that comes in four stages: read, reflect, respond, and rest.
I’ve found that the easiest way to build this practice is to use the Hallow app.
Using Hallow, the daily Gospel is read to you and you get to choose how long your meditation will be.
This meditation is free (from 5-15 minutes) even after the 30-day free trial.
These are only 3 options for making Scripture part of your day. There are many more out there, but these are the 3 that I’ve personally used. Try one, or all three(!), to make Scripture reading part of your day.
