There are a ton of books out there about decluttering and organizing. But if I had to pick my top 3 must-read book books for staying organized, none of them are actual books about organizing.
I’m always asked, how do I stay organized and how do I get my family to help me? I think these 3 books are the best answers to these questions.
Here are my 3 must-read books for staying organized (and they’ll completely surprise you!).
01. Atomic Habits by James Clear
Did you know that your habits account for 40% of what you do each day? If that’s truly the case, then it may be your habits preventing you from staying organized.
James Clear’s book provides great insight and examples for creating good habits and how to fix the bad ones …which is probably more helpful!
Many of our poor organizational habits are because of our bad habits. For me, that’s usually the bad habit of procrastination. Clear offers his “Laws of Behavior Change” as a solution, which really do work! (Read this post on Two-Minute Habits to see it in action.)
I recommend Atomic Habits as a tool to help you in your efforts to create good organizing habits, the basis for staying organized.
02. The 5 Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman
The stickiest question I get asked is “How do I get my husband to help me with organizing?” I’m no marriage counselor, so I have to defer to this book.
On the whole, this book is about communicating with your spouse in a way that speaks most deeply to them. Learning our primary love languages has helped my husband and me communicate better and understand one another better.
In my experience, I’ve found that the best way to get my spouse to help me around the house is through working on our marriage. Nurturing a loving and successful relationship with your spouse is a lot of work! And The 5 Love Languages is a helpful tool for working on the communication part of marriage.

03. The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin
What motivates you to get things done? Outer expectations or inner expectations? That’s what The Four Tendencies aims to help you figure out.
This book explains four personality types related to expectations. Insight into your Tendency (and the Tendencies of those around you), can help you strategically come up with a plan for getting and staying organized.
But don’t box yourself into a corner when you figure out your Tendency. Use it as a tool to help you implement the “Laws of Behavior Change,” explained in Atomic Habits.

Are you surprised at my 3 must-read books for staying organized? The hardest and most important part of organizing is keeping it organized. Understanding the psychology in these books will aid you in figuring out how to strategically organize your home and keep it that way.
