One of the very best parts of the week is going to the library to find great books to read. At first, we spent most of our time making discoveries in the picture books. But lately, we’ve ventured into fairy tales, poetry, language, and classic lit.
There’s truly so much to discover in a library.
But for as many great books there are, it can be overwhelming to choose which ones to read.
I was incredibly influenced by books I read as a kid. Certain ones have stuck with me throughout my whole life.
With this experience in mind, I know it’s essential to find great books to fill my daughter’s mind.
We want to read books that are true, good, and beautiful. This can be hard to find in many popular modern books.
Fortunately, there are many resources for finding great books to read with your kids.
Honey for a Child’s Heart
This book dives into what makes a good book, how to encourage reading, reading different genres, and instruction on finding good books. It also includes a bibliography of good books to read.
Books Children Love
Looking for books on a specific subject for a certain age? This is a fantastic book for that. Books Children Love is organized by subject. Each entry includes a brief summary of the book as well as the appropriate age range. This book is my favorite resource.
Let the Authors Speak
If history feels dull to you, this book lists historical books to read instead of dry textbooks. My husband flipped through it and decided that he was cheated out of so much education having NOT read most of these books.
Books are organized by time period and continent. You can easily create an entire history curriculum using this resource.
Let the Authors Speak is out of print. There are some used ones floating around (check bookfinder.com).
Love2learn.net
There are several booklists on this website, including one for Reading Your Way Through History. This is a Catholic resource, so it includes a lot of books about various saints.
Honorable Mention: Before Austen Comes Aesop
I don’t have this book but I listened to an interview with the author. This is on my list of homeschool resources to get!
According to Cathy Duffy Reviews, Before Austen Comes Aesop includes contemporary books, which is one of the reasons I want to add this to my resources! The other resources listed in this post are a bit dated. However, they list books that stand the test of time.
Going to the library to choose books can be very overwhelming. There are so many to choose from! Using a list of tried-and-true books can help you narrow down books that are true, good, and beautiful.
But don’t limit yourself to only these recommended books. You can often find good books to read with your kids by doing some exploring! Once you understand what makes a good book, it’s easier to know which books are worth re-reading!
