We finally have cooler weather in Southern California …in fact, it’s raining as I write this post. Right now, I’m planning (and doing) all the things I like to do when the seasons change from the heat of summer to prepare my home for winter.
I didn’t always do these things. And these tasks have nothing to do with covering pipes or whatever you do to get ready for snow. So if you’re looking for a post like that, this isn’t it.
This post is about prioritizing creating a true home for my family. These tasks help to enhance our comfort in my home.
I could very well get away with not doing anything on this list (and I have). These tasks wouldn’t be worth my time to do if I didn’t do them with love. But my deepest desire during this season of life is to serve my family in this way. I’m learning that God has called me to serve him in doing these little things …little things that make life sweeter and more memorable for those I love.
In my heart for serving my family, here are the tasks on my mind to prepare my home for winter.
Decluttering
Any time of year is good for decluttering, but when the weather gets colder, I take inventory of my daughter’s wardrobe. This is the time when I find which cold-weather clothes she lacks and move summer clothing into storage.
This is also a time to straighten up and tidy other storage spaces that are unkempt from the previous season. Many times I’m shifting items into better positions so we can use them during the new season.
Seasonal house cleaning
This year, with the help of my husband, I cleaned all our windows inside and out. It’s quite embarrassing how filthy they were! Now we can enjoy a clear view of the season from the cozy inside of our house.
Now that it’s cooler, I can run the self-clean on my oven (which does a great job with little effort from me). I’ll be ready to bake all my Thanksgiving desserts.

Wash bedding
The rain reminds me to launder all our comforters, pillows, and throws. I really should do it much more often. But with this life season, once a season is about as often as I can work it in. And it’s ok.
There’s a checklist in the RNL Shop with ideas for what to clean each season. Incorporate one or two as life permits.
Baking
Cloudy, cold weather always reminds me of the pies and warm treats my mom would make for us when I was a kid. Baking takes time, and the fact that she did it, in spite of being busy studying for her college classes, made us all feel so loved. I carve out time to bake something special for my little family too …in addition to this weekly bread.
Hearty meals
I look forward to certain meals for the winter. I make sure to plan more soups and stews to keep us warm and cozy in the evenings.
These are all the tasks on my mind to prepare my home and my little family for the cooler months. Just because I’m doing these things doesn’t necessarily mean you must do it too. This is what feels right for me in the place I’m at. This post is meant to inspire you to find little ways to love and serve your family.
