Are you looking for a way to really get organized this year? Why not use these 3 steps to organize your home this year that will actually get you results …in other words, a plan that includes creating good organizing habits.
Let me explain what I mean …
A couple of years ago, I wanted to start exercising regularly. I needed a plan to keep me motivated and accountable so that I could make exercise into a habit. I found an app that did just that: it gives me a weekly exercise plan and I do it.
Having the planning part out of my hands takes the hassle and overwhelm out of achieving my goal. I only had to focus on the habit.
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, writes, “Spend less time focusing on outcomes and more time focusing on the habits that precede the results.”
Outsourcing my exercise plan allows me to focus on creating the habits that get me results.
Despite what many people think, organizing is a habit. Yes, decluttering is important but that’s not what keeps you organized.
Creating habits that help you to organize your stuff is what will bring you the outcome of an organized home.
If you’re serious about getting organized, use these 3 steps to organize your home this year that allows you to outsource the planning and focus on the habits to be successful.
Step 01. Set a goal
Even if you don’t know where to start organizing your home, you probably have an idea of what needs to be changed.
Make a list of the areas you want to have organized. Then decide what success looks like for you. Saying you “just want it to be organized” won’t help you. Be specific.
For example, do you need the back door from your kitchen to function as a drop zone? What does that look like for you? Perhaps some hooks for hanging keys, bags, and coats and a basket or rack for shoes?
Getting specific about what you want can streamline the steps for getting there.
If you need an official place to write it down, use the Where To Start Decluttering Guide, found here >>>
Step 02. Create a plan
Planning includes deciding when you’ll declutter, for how long, how you’ll remove unwanted items, and how you’ll arrange the space.
These steps get done faster working with an Organizing Specialist like me. I help you decide when to declutter and choose a clutter removal plan. Plus, either in-person or through a written step-by-step plan, I help you to quickly declutter and organize your space.
Before you think it’s too expensive, think of what the investment can give you:
- Peace of mind, if you’re overwhelmed.
- More time, if you feel like you never get anything done.
- A specific place to start, if you don’t know where to begin.
- Saves you money, not buying organizing products that don’t work for you.

Step 03. Focus on habits
Once your space is organized, you’ll want to keep it organized! Don’t do all that work for nothing! This is where building strong organized habits are key.
By having someone else plan your project, you can put more energy into developing habits to keep you organized.
James Clear writes, “Success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations.”
In other words, getting your space organized is a transformation …success depends on your daily habits.
While creating an overall vision and an organizing plan is a big part of what I do, helping clients develop habits and add them into their daily routines is much bigger. We uncover why certain spaces don’t stay organized so that each client can get personalized recommendations on which habits to develop.
If you’re investing in services, I want you to get a big bang for your buck!
