One seed that’s been planted in my brain for the past 4 years is to do things little by little. While it would be nice to do everything at once and be done, that isn’t always possible to do. It’s better to find easy tasks to do when things, especially around your home, are overwhelming.
Clients are often overwhelmed by all there is to do when their homes or belongings have gotten out of control. It seems like nothing they do could possibly make much difference.
Then when I come into the project, we make progress, little by little.
If you have a space or task in your home that needs organizing or systematizing, there are some easy tasks you can do before calling in the calvary (me).
Do these 5 easy tasks when your home is overwhelming so you can feel accomplished and make small progress.
Make the beds
The quickest and easiest way to make a bedroom tidier is simply to make the bed. A made bed instantly transforms a room, even if there are piles around.
It’s the daily organizing habit I recommend starting with because it takes less than a minute to do —as long as you don’t have a billion decorative pillows.
Throw away trash
Many times cluttered, disorganized rooms are so because there is random trash scattered everywhere. If you can throw away empty bottles and cans, bits and scraps of paper, and broken things, you can easily eliminate clutter.
Grab a trash bag and set a 5-10-minute timer. See how much clutter you can eliminate in one room just by throwing away the trash.
Organize one extra small area
Having one small space that’s organized can bring so much satisfaction. When I work with clients, we always begin work with one box, one shelf, one basket, one drawer at a time. When it’s that small, you can’t be overwhelmed by stuff and it won’t take long to organize.
Even if there’s chaos all around you, you can open up that one drawer that’s organized to bring you satisfaction.

One load of laundry
Now let’s get into home management systems. Oftentimes, I help clients get these household tasks under control and establish new systems.
Laundry is a burden for many households. Collect all the laundry piles from around the house into one area. Then start doing laundry, one load at a time, all the way through putting it away.
Just getting caught up will alleviate a lot of anxiety.
Put away dishes
Many households leave dishes out to air dry. I understand the reasoning behind this, and some items are better left to air dry.
The problem is that leaving all the washed dishes to air dry backs up everything in the sink. There’s no room to put newly washed dishes out to air dry. As a result, the dirty dishes pile up.
To solve this, towel dry as many dishes as possible and put them away immediately. This frees up counter space and prevents dishes from piling up in the sink and on the counters.
To level up a bit, this is a great task for kids to begin learning. (Adults or older kids can help with heavy or sharp dishes.) Kids learn to put things away right away and they learn where items go in the kitchen. (Yes, you’ll be answering a lot of, “Where does this go?” but that’s ok.)
Do these 5 easy tasks when your home is overwhelming:
- Make the beds
- Throw away trash
- Organize one extra small area
- One load of laundry
- Put away dishes
You don’t have to do them all in one day, but you certainly could!
