Every once in a while there’s a space in your home that drives you absolutely crazy. My laundry room cabinet was that space for me.
I don’t have the prettiest or biggest laundry space, and it’s going to take time and effort to make it what I really want it to be. But making my laundry room cabinet more functional and less cluttered made a big difference in my sanity.
While I certainly could have, I didn’t spend a lot of money to tidy up the clutter.
You, too, can achieve a tidied up, functional, and budget-friendly laundry room cabinet.
(I’ve also included ideas for a more “dressed up” laundry room cabinet if you have more wiggle room in your budget.)
My Laundry Room at a Glance
My laundry room is a narrow entryway to the garage. (I don’t know who thought this was a good design idea.) Everything’s in the way or completely out of reach. Nonetheless, this is what I have to work with.
The cabinet that hangs above my washer is too high for a shorter person like me. I can reach the front of the bottom shelf but if I need something further back, I need a stepstool. Reaching the top shelf on my own is completely impossible.
How the Cabinet is Organized
Since I can’t reach the top shelf, less often used cleaning supplies or extra supplies are stored on the top shelf.
The bottom shelf is mainly laundry supplies or cleaning supplies we often reach for. However, the way I set up the storage made it difficult to reach the things I needed.
Using Functional Storage
Before, I used plastic totes without lids to keep similar items together. However, they were too big for the space, and I prefer to hide clutter, even when a cabinet is open. Plus, the totes were falling apart. (As a side note, I do NOT recommend IRIS totes.)
Since I can’t reach the back of the bottom shelf, I decided to go with an inexpensive Lazy Susan so that I don’t have to pull out my step stool every time I need a different spray bottle.
I moved most of my cleaning supplies to the top shelf by adding a second plastic basket to the top. Using removable baskets means I can pull everything down and actually see what I’m looking for since it’s so high up.
Since items can spill, I recommend using storage items that can be washed, rinsed, and easily dried. (I also recommend lining your shelves with a plastic liner to make it easy to wipe up spills.) It’s good to be functional, but also practical.
There are prettier containers for laundry powders, but I went with two Flip-Tite containers. Using two rather than one large one means each container is easier to lift when I’m reaching up. And they fit quite nicely in that corner.
