Laundry is part of everyday living and a key part of home management. Yet it becomes a burden to many people because of its tendency to pile up and take up space. There are many different ways to manage the laundry without it becoming overwhelming.
I’m breaking down my laundry schedule and how I manage the laundry.
Laundry Schedule
There are a lot of different laundry schedules but the one that works best for me is a twice-a-week schedule, on Monday and Thursday. Doing laundry twice a week keeps the piles from becoming overwhelming. It also helps me keep track of how often things are being laundered.
On Monday I wash one load of towels, a load of colors, and a load of delicates that air dry. On Thursday I wash colors and towels together, sheets, and depending on where we are in the season, pillows, bedding, curtains, or rugs.
Evening
These last few months I’ve taken advantage of the delay start function on my washer. We’ve had the washer for 7 years, and I can’t believe it took so long to use it!
On Sunday nights and Wednesday nights, I gather all the laundry baskets into the laundry room to separate. I add one load to the washer and delay the start to around 5:30-6am.
Morning
By the time I’m up, one load of laundry is ready to move to the dryer. While I wait for my coffee (I use a French press, so it takes time) I move the load and start a new one. Once each load is done drying, I move it all to my bed to fold since the laundry room is in close proximity.
I try to fold everything right away so that clothes don’t get wrinkled. I put clothes away as I fold, skipping the laundry basket. Since we live in a single-story, there’s no need to tote baskets up and down the stairs. But this strategy prevents piles of clean clothes from piling up and creating another chore.
Afternoon
By afternoon, I’m done with washing any more loads and the rest of the time is folding, air drying, and putting away.
One “rule” I have is that all the laundry must be put away before bedtime. When I don’t procrastinate on laundry (and all chores, for that matter), my life has much more freedom.
