An essential part of homemaking and home management is time management. There are many tools in time management, one of which is to use theme days to structure your week.
I look at time management as the foundation for all organization. I hear again and again that no one has time to organize.
But have you made time for it?
I didn’t reach many of my goals last year because I allowed myself to get distracted and I didn’t use my time well. But when I did make time for specific goals, I achieved them.
It doesn’t matter if your goal is to build a money-making blog or declutter under your kitchen sink. Unless you make time to do it, it won’t happen.
To set time aside to work on your goals, structure your week using theme days. As a homemaker, theme days enable me to spend my time wisely and accomplish tasks before they pile up.
Why use theme days to structure your week
Assigning each day its own theme provides a blueprint for planning my week. Instead of staring at a blank planner, wondering what to do on each day, a theme gives me direction.
With themes, I know which actions to prioritize and make them a priority by assigning time for them. This allows me to focus on one thing so that I build momentum and traction and get things done.
Choosing theme days
Many of the tasks I complete during a theme day don’t actually take all day. Some tasks only take a couple of hours. Here are some ideas for theme days to incorporate into your week:
- Cleaning
- Decluttering
- Meal Planning
- Planning
- Budgeting
- Paper Management
- Groceries
- Errands
- Laundry
- Meal Preparation
Sample theme days to structure your week
Here is how I theme my days in regard to caring for my home:
- Monday – Laundry
- Tuesday – Ironing & Breadmaking
- Wednesday – Groceries & Errands
- Thursday – Laundry & Batch Cleaning
- Friday – Finances & Paper Management
- Saturday – Decluttering
- Sunday – Planning & Rest
Deciding how much time to spend on theme day tasks
As I mentioned earlier, many of these tasks on my theme days don’t actually take all day long. Scheduling a block of time to do tasks ensures that I get those things done within that time. If not, something else has to come out of the schedule.
A side note about theme days versus daily rhythms
There are certain tasks that I do daily in order to maintain my home. These tasks are simply part of my everyday rhythm in cleaning and organizing my home. For more on this, please read this post.
Theme days will free up your time
Using theme days will add structure to your week. You’ll no longer feel unaccomplished and you’ll actually have time to work on goals, tasks, and things that are piling up.
Theme days aren’t just for structuring your home management routines …use them for work, homeschooling, meal planning, or anything you need to schedule.
