Every year there’s a flurry of excitement during the back-to-school season to get all the new school supplies. I loved —ok, still love —collecting school supplies and setting up my planner for the new year. There’s a lot to organize during the back-to-school season.
But organizing backpacks and desks is only part of the preparation for back-to-school. Whether your kids attend traditional school or homeschool, home is the base for everything during the school year.
Organizing your home will make the school year run smoother and less hectic.
Here are 4 reasons why you need to organize your home during the back-to-school season.
Establish systems
Systems allow a flow for organization. Setting up and establishing systems as the school year begins can make life run smoothly in your home.
For instance, set up a system in your drop zone for easy departures and returns for backpacks, coats, and shoes.
Designate an area for an Actionable Paper Hub for incoming papers so everything is accounted for.
Declutter clothing and shoes to do away with the stressful morning rush of getting dressed and eliminate unnecessary laundry.
These are just a few systems that can streamline the flow of your home.
More time
One direct effect of organizing is that you’ll have more time. Americans on average spend 2.5 days per year searching for lost items. Think of what you could do with 2.5 more days!
The school year is hectic enough with homework, sports, and extra activities. Intentionally setting aside time to declutter and organize your home has a high return on investment in regard to time.
The areas of your home that get the most use should be organized first. Break the space into smaller sections that can be organized in a few minutes a day or in a few hours.

Fewer things to manage
As a result of effective decluttering, you’ll have fewer items to manage daily (which also gives you more time). If you find yourself constantly picking things up or you realize you don’t have time to pick things up, paring down to what you absolutely love and need will bring you freedom.
As the school year kicks into full gear, you’ll be able to focus on what’s most important. There are many things to manage, so removing any unnecessary items that add to your to-do list (including cleaning up clutter) will make life less busy.
Better relationships
Disorganization can make us grouchy. The inability to find what we need and the feelings of overwhelm associated with clutter make it hard to be kind.
Taking the effort to declutter and establish systems can truly improve relationships. People feel better and happier in tidier homes, making kindness thrive.
To improve organization for a family, rework areas that are clutter hotspots. Provide hooks for bags & jackets and baskets for corralling items. Use labels, and store items where it makes the most sense and where it’s easy to return things to their homes.
While all these things seem small in the scheme of things, it’s the little things that add up in relationships.
Organize for the back-to-school season
There are 4 reasons you need to organize during the back-to-school season:
- To establish systems for a smooth-running home.
- More time to do the activities required for the school year.
- Fewer things to manage so you can focus on priorities.
- Nurture better relationships because the home has a calmer atmosphere.
