Have you gotten organized yet? No? Perhaps an organizing mindset has stopped you in your tracks …
“I don’t know where to start.”
“I don’t have time.”
“It’s overwhelming.”
I get it. I’ve had these thoughts as well for many, many things. But here’s what I’ve realized: these thoughts do nothing to help me move forward. They’re exactly what is holding me back from achieving what I need to achieve!
Flip the script on your organizing mindset so you can start getting organized!
01. Do something different
The idea that they don’t know where to start organizing stops people in their tracks. But there’s a lot of advice on the internet (including on this blog) about where to start.
Flip the script on “I don’t know where to start.” Instead, say, “I will start.”
Take a piece of “getting started” advice you haven’t done before and try it out.
It may be to find a small area to organize, such as a drawer or top of a desk. Perhaps it’s having a professional create a personalized plan telling you exactly what to do.
It may be simply to move past the research stage!
Once you’ve tried something, guess what? You started! And once you start, it’s easier to gain momentum to keep going.
02. Time is yours
There are many things on my to-do list that I need to do, yet I still spend time mindlessly scrolling Instagram. I’m constantly wasting time, and you probably are, too.
I’ve quit saying, “I don’t have time.” Now I flip the script and think, “How can I invest my time today?”
Think of decluttering as a gift to your future self. Sure, it takes a bit of time upfront, but the minutes spent looking for lost keys or stressing over a messy space add up fast.
Decluttering is an investment in winning back your time.
03. Take it a little at a time
Overwhelm is a common companion while decluttering …actually, it’s a companion on any large project. Looking at the full picture of all there is to accomplish is overwhelming.
Whenever I have a large project I feel overwhelmed by, I take a step back. Instead of saying “I’m overwhelmed,” I flip the script and think, “What can I accomplish right now?”
Breaking things down into bite-sized tasks makes the job more attainable. When decluttering, set a timer for just 15 minutes and focus on one small area.
