When I wrote this photo organizing series, a reader commented, “You should try Amazon Photos. It’s awesome!” I truly wanted to but the thought of moving years and years of photos to a new app was not something I wanted to do after that first massive photo organizing project.
Fast forward to the end of 2023 when Google started warning me about running out of storage space —I knew it was time to start finding an alternative.
Based on my lovely reader’s suggestion, I researched Amazon Photos, learning that it was the choice app for many photographers.
Since I’ve started using the app, I’m convinced …
Here’s why Amazon Photos is the best photo organizing app.
01. Free unlimited photo storage for Prime members
I loved Google Photos for a long time because of the free storage and sharing. But they changed their plans to 15GB per user a few years ago.
Amazon has unlimited free photo storage and 5GB of video storage for all Prime members. But that’s not the best part: unlike Google, which stores low-rez images, Amazon gives its users full-resolution photo storage.
This means that if you’re using an online service as one of your photo storage backups, you’re sure to get the best photos when using Amazon if you ever need to download your photos. For me, this is a huge peace of mind.
Since I wanted a backup for videos (the biggest reason why I had to leave Google Photos), I purchased extra storage from Amazon. (I purchased 1 TB of storage for $59.99 a year.) Now if my external hard drive fails, or something happens to Dropbox, I’ll have another backup of my videos.
02. Easy Photo & Video Syncing
After downloading the app and connecting it to your Prime account, the app will automatically begin syncing photos and videos when open and connected to Wifi. But the reason why this is so great comes in the next few points.
(You can connect to your Echo or Fire Stick so you can view your photos on other devices!)
03. Save your photos & your spouse’s photos in one place
One of the most difficult parts about being the family memory keeper is collecting all the photos! Unlike Google, you can add family members to your photo account so that all photos sync to a single shared timeline.
For example, if you go on vacation and your husband takes a bunch of photos, you’ll find them all in your Amazon Photos account as soon as he opens the app to sync them. This has made a huge difference in my memory-keeping this year!
04. Easy photo & video downloads
If you look back at my post “How To Organize Your Photos Part 1: Setting Up Your Photo Hub,” Amazon Photos makes setting up a photo hub a breeze …especially if you’re moving photos from iPhone to PC.
Now I don’t have to connect my iPhone to my PC anymore. After I’ve synced my photos on the app, I open Amazon Photos on my PC, select the photos & videos I want to download, and then get a neat zip file to extract anywhere I want.
05. Labeled photo & video files
Professional photo organizers will tell you to label all your photo files with dates, times, etc. This doesn’t happen automatically when downloading photos from iPhone to PC, so I skipped this step and was left with titles like “IMG 201.” Non-descriptive labels make photo files difficult to keep straight.
When downloading files from Amazon Photos to a PC, the images are labeled with dates and times, making it easy to organize photos when moving to various backups.
06. Easy sorting & filtering within the app
Unlike Google Photos, you can sort photos in Amazon Photos by year, month, location, media type, person, etc. This feature made it easy to download photos to move to my other photo hubs. (I’ll dig into creating a photo hub with Amazon in another post.)
Bonus: Amazon Photos now links to Shutterfly!
A new feature in November 2024 is the ability to connect Amazon Photos to your Shutterfly account! I’m thrilled at this because Shutterfly is my choice for creating my annual family photo books. Now I can skip manually transferring photos to my Shutterfly account, saving me even more time!
The Best Photo Organizing App
To recap, here’s why I think Amazon Photos is the best photo organizing app:
- Free unlimited photo storage for Prime members
- Easy photo & video syncing
- Save your photos & your spouse’s photos in one place
- Easy photo & video downloads
- Labeled photo & video files
- Easy sorting & filtering within the app
- Connects with Shutterfly
Hands down, Amazon Photos is the easiest, most convenient photo organizing app I’ve ever used. It’s streamlined my photo organizing process into mere minutes and given me peace of mind.
In a later post, I’ll explain the process I used to transfer all my photos to Amazon Photos. Plus, I’ll reveal my brand-new photo organizing process.
