I’m a planner aficionado. I currently use a goal planner, a day planner, and a homeschool planner. Why? Because these tools help me create a framework for a focused and productive year.
Three planners might sound like overkill but each one serves a purpose.
Today, I’m honing in on one planner type in particular: my goal planner.

01. Guidance
When I start a new year I have many goals on my mind. How do I narrow down the priorities?

Once I’ve narrowed down my goals, it takes me a step further to create a goal action plan. Goals look so big and daunting at the beginning of the year. Breaking them into smaller steps makes them attainable.
02. Focus
Writing all my goals in one place helps me to stay on track. In the past when I had a goal, I’d forget it after a month or two. Many projects would be started, laid aside, and forgotten. Using the Tending List each month reminds me what I’m zeroing in on, even if it’s something small!
A natural tendency of human beings is to lose focus every 90 days. I refresh, re-write, or revisit my goals every 90 days using my planner. This helps me to evaluate if my goals still align or if I need to make changes. In other words, writing down and revisiting my goals every day keeps me focused.
03. Progress
My collection of goal planners proves to me that I’ve made progress. There are many months when I don’t feel like I’m making much headway on my goals. But when I take a moment to look back on the year (or years), it’s obvious that progress came a little at a time.
For example, in my first goal planner from 2019, I wrote goals such as:
- Quit using my phone at bedtime
- Pray a family Rosary each week
- Complete a family photo book
- Create a meal plan
- Upload pictures to my computer every month
Since then, these goals have become part of my regular life. If I hadn’t written them down, I wouldn’t have noticed my progress!
04. Reflection
Life moves so quickly sometimes, doesn’t it? I’m often so busy that I don’t stop to reflect on what happened or what’s happening. The PowerSheets help me to look back on the month and anticipate the month ahead.
As I mentioned, I often feel like I didn’t make progress on a particular month. Repeated reflection and review help me push ahead and remember why my goals matter.
